New Technology at Commonwealth Stadium Reaches Out to Nearby Fans Through Their Smartphones
BOULDER, Colo., October 29, 2015 – SportsLabs, a leading sports-technology provider, today announced a first-of-its-kind digital experience in college football stadiums. The University of Kentucky’s Commonwealth Stadium has been equipped with location-based technology to send fans additional information about the famous former Wildcats as they pass near its Ring of Honor. The new feature will launch for the Tennessee game on Oct. 31, 2015.
“There’s so much history in storied programs like Kentucky that when you’re in the stadium you can’t help but think ‘if these walls could talk’,” said John Burris, president of SportsLabs. “Now they can. The University of Kentucky is leading the way in the trend for college sports—making the stadium itself an interactive experience through technology.”
The stadium has been geofenced—a digital boundary placed around the stadium alerting location-based apps of its presence—so each fan with the Kentucky Wildcats Gameday app will receive a welcome message on their phone as they enter. The message will explain that as fans near each honoree’s placement on the Ring, which is located in the concourse of the stadium, they will receive player cards with biographical and statistical information about the noted Wildcats through the Gameday app.
“The walls between a digital and physical experience are increasingly thin in all aspects of our modern lives,” said Burris. “Kentucky’s stadium installation is a perfect example of what’s happening not just in sports entertainment, but in society.”
Each Ring of Honor section is equipped with Bluetooth beacons from Gimbal, enabling the information to be transmitted to fans.
